Thinly slice red chili pepper, and stir into the wok. Cook, a couple of minutes.

Quick and cheap filling vegetarian food (I’m going ovo-lacto for this)
Soup:
Dump some cans of stuff in a pot. Maybe some seasoning too. Pearl barley or rice may also be a good choice to bulk things out. With beans or legumes and some kind of grain you can make a whole protein. If that doesn’t appeal to you add some cheese or poached egg. Don’t add a lot of rice btw it will expand don’t turn your soup into a rice dish I swear to gosh
Quesadillas:
Basic idea for this is shredded cheese melted in between two tortillas warmed up on either side in a pan, in a microwave if you’re feeling extra depressed. But other stuff can be added. Salsa, pico, leftover tofu or beans, sliced peppers or onion. It’s a dish that’s as complicated or as simple as you want to make it.
Casseroles:
Dump a can of cream of mushroom or cream of potato soup on it. It’ll work itself out probably.
Scrambled eggs:
The most braindead way to cook eggs. You can even scramble them in the pan. Put stuff in it. I like putting fried tomatoes in it. Add enough mushrooms and cheese and you can feel your system clogging up in real time. Eat some toast with it to convince yourself that adding carbs makes it fine actually
Curry:
Wildly oversimplified term for basically most Indian food. It’s simpler to make than you think. The spices are the important part. The base of a lot of types of Indian food is onion, ginger, garlic, and tomato and then add spices and stuff to that. What stuff? Whatever. Spinach, potatoes, coconut milk, regular milk, even more tomatoes, lentils, beans, yogurt. Put it over rice probably. Use powdered onion and ginger-garlic paste and canned tomatoes when you’re tired. Probably look up some actual Indian YouTubers and bloggers to get more specific recipes than my stupid ass can provide.
Peanut noodles:
Cook some noodles. Probably ramen noodles. Melt some peanut butter on it and add soy sauce. Merry Christmas.
Melts:
Get a panini press so you never have to think again. Cheese, something else, bread, hot, eat. Add a sauce and some nicely grilled vegetables if you want to but tbh a midnight grilled cheese with tomato isn’t gonna be a gourmet meal. Just make it so you can finish crying.
Smoothie:
Frozen fruit and/or veggies and some kind of liquid. I usually use strawberry, mango, and soymilk. Maybe yogurt too idk. The worst part of this is cleaning the blender later but the actual process of making it is fast.
Pasta:
There’s more to life than just spaghetti and red sauce. Or so I’ve been told. You can use canned soups as a sauce sometimes if you reduce them a bit. I like butternut squash soup. Adding some cream cheese to sauces tastes better than it sounds and can fix your protein problem that you sometimes get with pasta dishes. Keeping a jar of pesto and some mushrooms in the fridge can make for a fast dinner when you need it.
Chili:
Get two different types of beans and some tomatoes and chili powder and whatever in a pot and let those bitches get to know each other and simmer while you stare off into space for a while. Maybe like 10-20 minutes idk it tastes good with sour cream

rimuru tempest with fem!tanjiro!reader headcanons
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hey guys, welcome to another collaboration with @deathmetalunicorn1, though the credit on the concept of the pairing and these headcanons go to my dear friend. I really hope you will enjoy what we have written. If you'd like to see more content like this, or an extended version of these headcanons, please let us know!
So with that being said, sit back, relax, and enjoy! :)
Although Rimuru Tempest  knows his significant other and her little sister are strong, he will not stop worrying about Tanjiro!reader’s wellbeing, especially when she and Nezuko  leave Tempest on a mission, and he is unable to join them for whatever reason. His anxiety will increase tenfold when his relationship with the former Demon Slayer evolved from being friends who just happened to stumble upon each other’s paths as soon as he left Veldor’s cave to being lovers.
It will be very hard for the demon lord to sleep for the first few nights when he is so used to curling up next to Tanjiro!reader and Nezuko, the latter sprawled out and almost always in her toddler form. However, when she does return, Tanjiro!reader will always bring back a souvenir from wherever she traveled to, normally a tasty treat or a cute little knick-knack she saw at a market.
[To ease his lord’s worries, Diablo will mobilize a few of the Black Numbers to keep a discreet eye on the Kamado siblings, personally delivering periodical reports on their whereabouts to Rimuru when it was an appropriate time between meetings and inspections around the capital. After all, an excellent butler must be able to anticipate his lord’s every need and alleviate his concerns so that he may continue to focus on his duties in the land. If something does happen, Diablo will act immediately and make sure Tanjiro!reader and Nezuko return to Tempest safely.]
Tanjiro!reader unwinds from her journey with a big hug from Rimuru in both his slime and human form. Rimuru would receive affection from Nezuko if she isn’t sleeping in her box in the form of bone crushing hugs or his hair being ruffled by a clawed hand. If Rimuru hadn’t eaten, she would whip a simple home-cooked meal that is either a traditional recipe from the Kamado household, or one that Mitsuri, the Love Hashira, had taught her when they were alive back in her old world.
Rimuru will definitely join in and help, even all she’ll allow him to do in the kitchen is wash the dishes.
After he had been reincarnated in this world, he took the Japanese cuisine he had eaten for granted, even the microwaveable ramen noodle cups he’d heat up in the company break room when he had to work late at the office. Back then, Misaki Satoru didn’t care much about his health so much as worried about forever remaining a virgin because he couldn’t score a date with a cute girl.
He honestly couldn’t have anything resembling his homeland’s cooking until his country was developed further, including the dwarves’ metal-working and the orcs’ infamous work ethic. He couldn’t remember how many times he had told Geld and the others to rest even when they insisted that they kept working. Now, he could share a meal and enjoy a hot bath with someone he loves very dearly.
Nezuko is, of course, welcomed to join them in the bath since she loves swimming around the large hot spring he had built in the back of his home. When she joined them, Rimuru reverted to being a slime to protect Nezuko’s innocence.  If he’s alone with Tanjiro!reader, he’ll either be a slime or his human form, depending on his mood.
Speaking of which, Nezuko is the little sister everyone in Tempest adores and will be fiercely protected. Rimuru is her favorite person, but when Milim decides to stop by for a visit, she is Nezuko’s new favorite, no matter how much he bribes her with newest confections that were created or toys. But between these two….Nezuko will always pick Tanjiro!reader, if she’s an option.
Rimuru’s love language includes quality time, words of affirmation, and gift-giving. But what he enjoys the most is having afternoon tea on the porch, him sitting in her lap as a slime and munching on sticks of mitarashi dango or different flavored onigiri.
If anything happened to either Tanjiro!reader or Nezuko because an enemy nation was jealous of Tempest’s flourishing economy and thought it would be a brilliant idea to hold them hostage or try to hurt them….they had better be prepared to have another kingdom falling into ruins.
Remember what happened to Falmuth?

Could you please do some headcanons about Batmans cooking disasters over the years?
Age 5: Bruce puts tinfoil in the microwave. Alfred shakes his head and laughs
Age 6: He decorates a cookie so badly another kid cries until they throw up
Age 7: He tries to make a PB&J and the countertop is sticky for a week
Age 8: He tries to make Martha's chicken noodle soup but ends up crying on the kitchen floor surrounded by half-chopped vegetables
Age 9: He tries to impress a houseguest by recreating Thomas's mixology tricks (sans alcohol). There's still a stain on the ceiling to this day
Age 10: He makes green eggs. It's not on purpose. He's never even read the book
Age 11: He makes lava in the school cafeteria
Age 12: He tries to make cheese bread by drilling holes into a baguette and filling it with melted nacho cheese
Age 13: He melts a cutting board in the oven
Age 14: He folds a Pop Tart
Age 15: The chocolate-covered bananas he makes for the school bake sale come out looking very very wrong
Age 16: He's asked to drop a home economics class after mistaking refried beans for pumpkin puree in a pie
Age 17: He boils eggs in the carton
Age 18: He makes his entire freshman dorm evacuate after burning his ramen to ash
Age 19: He sculpts a severed hand out of meatloaf and is sent to the university psychologist
Age 20: He tries to bake a cake but doesn't have a cake pan, so he pours the batter right in the oven
Age 21: He tries Thomas's mixology tricks again, this time with alcohol. One of the tricks is flipping it over his head. He ends up losing part of his vision for 3 days
Age 22: He burns water. Harley Quinn is there. She still holds it over his head
Age 23: He packs his first patrol snack as Batman. It's a chocolate bar wrapped in a tortilla. The chocolate melts onto his gloves and he drops the tortilla down a sewer grate
Age 24: He makes an ice cream cookie sandwich to eat while he and Batgirl work on a case, but he's so engrossed in the work that he doesn't notice it melt until Babs points it out
Age 25: He enters the first annual Justice League cook-off and immediately gets banned from ever entering again
Age 26: He tries to comfort little Dickie Grayson by making fried cornbread from a book of Roma comfort recipes. It turns out about as well as you'd expect when you give Bruce Wayne hot oil. Bruce is genuinely bummed out, but Dick says it's the thought that counts
Age 27: Clark delivers a huge hunk of beef from the farm. Instead of waiting for Alfred to come back, Bruce and Dick try to break it down with a power saw
Age 28: Bruce and Dick's latkes are burned so badly they can play floor hockey with them
Age 29: He makes stuffed mushrooms. Badly. Like imagine the worst way you can fuck up a mushroom. It still won't compare to what Bruce did. And it's for a potluck with the West-Allens that Barry won't let him live down
Age 30: Bruce sees Dick struggling to make ravioli and he's like "Let me show you how it's done" before proceeding to make it infinitely worse
Age 31: Bruce sees a hungry Jason Todd and the first thing he does when they return to the manor is make a double-decker bread sandwich. That's bread with two more slices of bread in between
Age 32: Bruce packs Dick and Jason's lunchboxes when Alfred is out of town. They're supposed to include a salad. Instead, Dick gets a whole head of lettuce and Jason's is just a bottle of ranch
Age 33: He makes hot chocolate after patrol... but forgets the chocolate
Age 34: The Manor is too cold, so Bruce tries to warm it up by making Jason's favorite soup. His hands shake the whole time. Suddenly, he's eight years old again, sitting on the kitchen floor surrounded by scraps reminding him of his failure
Age 35: Jack and Janet Drake are out of the country again, leaving young Timmy by himself. Bruce decides to bring some dinner over. It's baked perfectly, but it's full of things that shouldn't be anywhere near a casserole dish. They end up ordering takeout and watching old detective movies together
Age 36: Steph walks through how to make waffles. Bruce is standing there, watching closely and taking notes. They still come out looking radioactive
Age 37: Cass asks if they can get smoothies. Bruce says he can make them at home. She gives him a warning look but that's not enough to stop him. Cue Bruce forgetting to put the lid on the blender
Age 38: Jason's first night back at home, Bruce tries to make that soup. It shoots out like a geyser and hits the lights. He's panicking until he hears Jason laugh, and then the soup doesn't matter
Age 39: Damian screws up hummus and he desperately tries to hide it so people won't see him as inadequate at something so basic. Instead of getting upset, Bruce assures him it's okay and offers to fix it. (He doesn't fix it, he just makes it worse)
Age 40: Bruce's birthday happens while he's fake-dead and away from home. He grabs a convenience store cupcake and sticks a single candle on it. Then he closes his eyes, pretends his family is around him, and makes a wish. (The candle droops and sets the hotel sheets on fire)
Age 41: Back at the Manor, he attempts to make lemonade on a particularly hot day. Selina offers to help, but Bruce declines, saying, "How hard can it be?" (Spoiler alert: it's not supposed to be full of seeds)
Age 42: Kate shows him a video of Canadians pouring maple syrup into the snow to make candy, so he gets her to boil the syrup so they can do it together. The problem comes when they can't control the pour and end up with a glob the size of Damian
Age 43: As part of a school project, Bruce and Duke try to deduce the Coca-Cola secret formula. Duke's teacher takes a point off because at the beginning he told her he'd taste the results, but there's no way he's doing that now
Age 44: The family gets together to make a full English breakfast Alfred's birthday. Each person takes a part—Dick has eggs, Jason has the grilled tomatoes, Tim has mushrooms, Duke has the bacon, Steph and Cass are tag-teaming the sausages, Damian just has to open a can of beans, and Bruce needs to put bread in the toaster. It goes South immediately when Damian reaches for his katana instead of the can opener
Age 45: Bruce puts tinfoil in the microwave. Alfred shakes his head and laughs

Tumblr media
Classic Japanese Ramen Recipe
Serves: 4
Ingredients:
Broth:
4 cups chicken broth
4 cups pork broth (or an additional 4 cups chicken broth)
2 cups water
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 tablespoon miso paste (optional for extra depth)
2 cloves garlic, minced
1-inch piece of ginger, sliced
1 tablespoon sesame oil
Toppings:
1 lb chashu pork (slow-braised pork belly, sliced)
4 soft-boiled eggs (cut in half)
2 sheets nori (seaweed), cut into strips
1 cup green onions, finely chopped
Bean sprouts, to taste
Noodles:
4 servings of fresh ramen noodles (or dried, if fresh is unavailable)
Instructions:
Prepare the Broth:
In a large pot, combine chicken broth, pork broth, and water. Add minced garlic, ginger slices, soy sauce, and miso paste if using. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Let it simmer for 30-40 minutes to allow the flavors to develop. Stir in sesame oil and keep warm.
Cook the Eggs:
Bring a small pot of water to a boil. Gently add eggs and boil for 6-7 minutes for soft centers. Remove and place them in an ice bath for a few minutes, then peel and set aside.
Cook the Noodles:
Cook the ramen noodles according to the package instructions. Drain and set aside.
Assemble the Ramen Bowls:
Divide the cooked noodles evenly into 4 bowls. Ladle the hot broth over the noodles. Top each bowl with slices of chashu pork, half a soft-boiled egg, a few strips of nori, a handful of bean sprouts, and chopped green onions.
Serve:
Serve immediately while hot. Enjoy with additional soy sauce or chili oil on the side, if desired.
Tips:
Chashu Pork: If you have time, prepare the chashu pork a day in advance by slow-braising pork belly in a mixture of soy sauce, mirin, sake, sugar, ginger, and garlic for 1.5 to 2 hours.
Eggs: Marinating the boiled eggs in soy sauce, mirin, and a bit of water overnight will add more flavor.

Thai Style Chicken Soup: a Kitchen Witch Recipe for the Days When You Can't Kitchen Witch
Tumblr media
Since I am sick, I wanted to share my favorite soup that helps me feel better fast. This isn't so much a magic recipe because I don't have the energy to do real kitchen magic when I am ill. But it's full of many ingredients that can help you feel better, and that's a different type of magic.
This is my absolute favorite soup, and I'm happy to make it for my partner or friends, even if I'm not the one who's under the weather. It is even better when I'm feeling ill. The chicken broth plus coconut milk soothes a sore throat, and the spices help to break up congestion. It stores well in the fridge for a couple of days and tastes even better after the flavors have had time to meld.
Besides the fresh ingredients, we like to keep everything needed to make this soup on hand during cold and flu season, just in case. We pick up the rest no-contact at our grocer to keep everyone else safe.
You will need:
Rotisserie chicken, shredded - about two cups
6 cups chicken broth
1/2 tbsp ground turmeric*
1/2 tbsp ground ginger*
1 tsp chili powder
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 fresh chili (as hot as you can stand - seed or not to your tolerance)
2 tbsp fish sauce (Worcestershire in a pinch, but Thai is better)
1/2 cup crushed peanuts
1/2 can coconut milk
juice of 1 lime
ramen noodles without flavor-packet (1 package per person you are serving)
4 tsp. toasted coconut, optional but recommended
fresh cilantro, optional, optional but recommended
green onion, optional but recommended
*if you have fresh, add them in with the garlic and fresh chilis
Saute garlic and fresh chili until tender
Add broth, turmeric, and ginger - bring to a boil and cook for 10 minutes
Reduce heat, add chicken, fish sauce, coconut milk, and crushed peanuts, ramen noodles, and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes (depending on the cooking instructions on your noodles)
Remove from the heat and add in lime juice
Serve with coconut, cilantro, and green onions as a garnish
If you have an InstaPot or similar, a hack to make this even more healthful when you are sick is to strip the chicken and make a bone broth to use as the base for this recipe. You can substitute store-bought bone broth as well.

reo mikage x fem!reader
content: you fell sick and reo spoils you with acts of service, helping you with every little thing - feeding you, cooking for you, etc. mentions of nagi a bit cause what is reo without nagi and vice versa :3
ari's note: plsplspls man's so in love w u that he wants nothing but ur comfort and safety. he prioritises you over anyone, himself included :( he's so cute omd i love him sm
Tumblr media
waking up from your slumber, you felt feverish. your body feeling hot but cold at the same time. shuffling around your bed, you reached for your phone on your bedside table, it was already 11am.
that explains the hundreds of messages from your beloved boyfriend, reo mikage.
"y/n??? whr r u?? r u ok?? not coming to school?" were some of his texts.
you were so sick, that you didn't even wake up for school despite the hundreds of alarms you had set the night before. groaning in pain, you sat up and texted back.
"sick, i overslept. not coming to school :,) sorry reo ily"
you hit send and used all your strength to get up and go to the kitchen to find a thermometer and medicine. the floor was cold, the sun was shining in through your windows. as you were searching the kitchen cabinets, your phone pinged multiple times. they were all texts from reo.
"omg ok :( i miss u alr im pretty sure nagi misses u too lolol i'll come over after school to look after u mkay" he texted.
after a few hours of loneliness and quiet, there was a knock on your door. you were cuddled up alone on your couch, watching a movie. medicine, water and other snacks were on the coffee table in front of you within your reach. you didn't move much, only getting up throughout the day to go to the bathroom or to get more snacks from the kitchen.
keys jingled and your door opened, revealing your lovely purple-haired boyfriend. with him was some plastic bags full of food and other items he deemed necessary for your recovery.
"helloooo, my looove! i missed you so much! how are you feeling?" he asked, cheering as he kicked his shoes off and placed them neatly on the shoe rack. he made his way over to you, dropping the bags on the floor and cupping your face, leaning down to press a soft kiss on your nose - to which you scrunched your nose at.
reo loved to kiss your nose, he thinks it's so cute and intimate.
you leaned into his touch, happy that he's finally here to pamper you.
"i missed you too, reo. i'm still a little sick, but i already ate some medicine so the fever is dying down. i've just been resting here."
he let go of your face and grabbed the plastic bags he had dropped earlier, then proceeding to sit beside you on the couch, "i brought you your favourites! and some of my old clothes for you to wear since i know you love to wear my clothes. you even choose to wear my clothes over expensive designer clothes!"
it was true, reo loved to buy you expensive clothes, perfumes, shoes, bags, and whatnot. he loved to spoil you. and you were beyond thankful for it, but you ultimately loved his clothes because, well, they were his, and they smelled like him.
your eyes brightened at the snacks he brought. but more importantly, you were happy your boyfriend was so caring.
reo's eyes directed to the ramen cup noodles in front of you on the coffee table. his eyes widened in horror.
"have you only been eating ramen noodles since you woke up?" he glanced at the clock, "it's already 6pm. you've been eating noodles for the past 6 hours?!" he gasped.
you giggled at his dramatic reaction.
"no, this won't do. i'll cook something for you, okay? what do you feel like eating?" he asked urgently. he was truly like a mother.
"hmm, ramen." you teased and he pouted, "noooo, my love. you need food, not instant noodles."
"i'll cook you some curry and rice. i saw a recipe online recently, i can try making it for you.” he pondered to himself.
reo gave you a kiss on the nose again before getting up to cook the curry in your kitchen. he practically lived here, he knew where all the ingredients are and where the pots and pans are. he lived in an expensive home with his parents, a lovely house that many people dreamed of living in - but at the end of the day, to him, home is wherever you are.
and right now, he felt so domestic, cooking for his sick girlfriend and doing her chores like washing dishes. the tv show you were watching was blaring in the background as reo cooked in your open theme kitchen which was conveniently placed next to the living room where you were. the layout of the room allowed him to keep an eye on you as he cooked.
soon, the aroma of curry filled the house and you perked up from your seat on the couch, seeing reo’s back facing you as he washed the pots and spoons he used.
he looked so manly. his shoulders were broad, and he was very tall. his hair was tied back into a bun, and the black shirt he wore was almost a size too small for his toned body. his clothes and demeanour completely opposed the silly pink apron he had tied around his waist. you found yourself staring in awe at his back. your heart fluttered.
you found yourself unconsciously getting up from your seat on the couch. the blanket that wrapped your body long discarded. you made your way over to where he was standing in the kitchen and slowly wrapped your hands around his waist. he jolted in surprise.
“woah, you scared me. you okay?” he asked after realising it was you. he resumed washing the dishes and continued to let you embrace him.
“i’m okay. i just wanted your warmth.” you mumbled against his back. reo’s breath hitched a little at the sudden confession, but he secretly liked it - he liked everything that’s going on right now. you hugging him, inhaling his scent, arms wrapped around his waist. having you so close to him where he can practically hear how loud your heart was beating from this intimacy you shared.
the two of you stayed like that until reo was done with washing the dishes. he dried his hands on a dry cloth and turned around to face you.
your hands were still locked around his waist. he looked down at you, with a dreamy look on his face. you looked up, chin resting against his chest and he couldn’t help but giggle at how cute you looked right now in his eyes.
“eat, okay? while the curry is still warm.” he flashed a smile at you and your heart fluttered.
reo is so handsome, you thought.
he instructed you to sit on the couch while he prepared you a portion of the food he had cooked. soon, he walked to you with one bowl in hand and took a seat on the couch.
“here. aaaaahhh,” he said as he took a spoonful of rice and curry, bringing it to your lips.
“reo? what are you doing? i can feed myself.” you giggled, leaning away from his hand. he raised an eyebrow, as if what he was doing is obvious. like you should know what he’s doing.
“what else am i doing? i’m feeding my lovely beautiful girlfriend who’s sick and needs my attention, of course!” he answered, “now c’mon! open up!” he insisted raising the spook to your lips again.
you chuckled and let him feed you. it wasn’t rare for reo to feed you - even when you’re in the pink of health, he always insisted on feeding you.
“at least let me feed you the first bite, then you can eat on your own.” he would say everytime he cooked for you.
now, you were focused on the present moment, treasuring this time when he fed you, cooing at you like you’re a baby - his baby. he just loved taking care of you.
after you had finished your meal, he put the bowl in the sink and cleared up the table in front of you - even sweeping the floor and taking out the trash.
“alright, my love. it’s 9pm, time to go to sleep.” he mumbled, seeing you nod off to sleep on the couch.
he picked you up bridal style and carried you to your bedroom, where he gently placed you down. he kissed your forehead and your nose, whispering “good night” and was about to leave the room to clean the kitchen some more until he felt you tug on the hem of his shirt.
“reo… please stay..” you muttered, half asleep but still wary of your surroundings.
“love, i need to clean the kitchen and wash up. i’ll join you when i’m done, ‘kay?” he replied softly, to which you whined at.
“hm, if you really insist,” he said, trying to act nonchalant - but it was no secret he enjoyed being needed by you, it was evident by the blush on his face. but of course, you didn’t need to know that. it’s not like you’ll know anyway, the room was dark. the only source of light was from the hallway that creeped into your room through the gap, and from the moonlight that seeped in through the window. you weren’t even conscious enough to notice the red on his cheeks and ears.
reo found himself tangled in bed with you, feeling you curl up against him. he found himself patting your back rhythmically, almost like patting a baby to sleep. well, you were his baby either way. he felt so ecstatic now, cherishing this moment with you. the soft snores that escaped your lips, the sound of your breathing, your hair that tickled his face and neck, everything about you, he absolutely cherished and loved.
in the comfort of the night, reo couldn’t help but fall asleep with you. you are his home, after all.
reo felt so incredibly lucky to have the honours of taking care of you. but the truth is, you felt even luckier to have a caring and kind boyfriend like him.

OK SO
#1 is my uncle's chicken matzah ball soup. Its a family legend of a soup. it's essentially a chicken stew and the signature spice is Hawaij: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawaij. it WILL stain anything it gets on yellow and its WONT come out. 100000/10 soup. On the application to the college I eventually went to the final application question was "what is one food you would cook for the admission team?" and I put this soup. (recipe will be under the cut)
#2: UDON AND RAMEN. both rank the same. slurp slurp noodles ohmmygod
#3: just a hearty meat and veggie soup plz
#4: spaghettios counts as soup sorry. so i guess cheesy-tomato soup. yum yum.
#5: melted ice cream that I eat like a soup
OK NOW FOR THE LEGENDARY SOUP RECIPE:
Matzo Ball Soup
Recipe from: Mum
Makes:
1 whole 8-piece chicken
1 turnip, chunked
1 rutabaga, chunked
2-3 large carrots, diced
1 onion, diced
1 head of whole garlic cloves
Lots of whole fresh parsley
1 tbsp Osem soup flavoring
1 Manischewitz Matzo Ball Soup Mix
Tons of Hawaij
Put a whole 8-piece chicken in a large pot with water. Bring to boil, skimming off the schmaltz that will gather on the top. (Schmaltz is a foamy-like fatty substance that appears on the rim.) Stop when the foam stops forming on the top of the soup.
While the chicken boils/cooks, chop up one turnip, one rutabaga, two to three large carrots, and one onion (just depends on preference). Add these to the pot along with whole garlic cloves. Add Osem chicken soup seasoning (to taste), about one tablespoon. Note this adds a good amount of salt to the soup. For richer flavor, you can use chicken/bone broth for the base soup as well. If you do this, add less water in the beginning as this will add volume.
Use Manischewitz matzo ball soup mix to make matzo balls (follow its instructions) and add the soup mix to the pot. Add tons of Hawaij (turmeric-like spice from the middle east). Must be Hawaij MARAK (marak = soup). Add in lots of whole parsley.
Note on adding matzo balls to soup: they take time to absorb the soup into the ball, but also get mushier as they sit in the liquid longer. So, add them whenever you decide, weighing these factors.
Optional: after a long time of simmering on low boil, remove the chicken and de-bone so you do not have to deal with that while eating. I do this by shredding it with two forks so I do not have to touch the boiling hot chicken. My mom does this by hand, burning her fingers.
*my uncle also sues potato in this soup but my family dislikes potato in soup so we removed it. feel free to add that back in! add different veggies. it will all taste of hawaij in the end.

Hot Salmon Ramen
Tumblr media
On a mostly cloudy and chill enough July Sunday, this tasty bowl of Hot Salmon Ramen, with its crisp radish and cucumber pickles and fragrant fresh chervil just picked in the garden, has donned its Summer clothes; and it remains as soothing as on a very cold day!  Happy Sunday!
Ingredients (serves 1):
1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil
1 thumb-sized piece fresh ginger
a small garlic clove, minced
half a red chili pepper
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1 tablespoon sweet soy sauce
1 tablespoon Nuoc mam (fish sauce)
2 cups water
60 grams/2 ounces dry ramen noodles
1 tablespoon demerara sugar
90 grams/3 ounces fresh salmon fillet
3 medium radishes, rinsed
3 or 4 slices Pickled Cucumbers
Garden Chervil, to garnish
In a large pot, heat toasted sesame oil over medium-high heat.
Peel ginger, and cut it into very thin slices. Add to the pot, and fry, a couple of minutes. Add garlic, and cook, 1 minute more.
Thinly slice red chili pepper, and stir into the pot. Cook, a couple of minutes.
Deglaze with soy sauce, sweet soy sauce, and Nuoc Mam. Stir in water, and bring to the boil.
Once boiling, stir in the ramen noodles. Cook, 3 minutes.
Stir demerara sugar into the pot, until dissolved. Allow the noodles to simmer, a couple of minutes more.
Meanwhile, cut salmon into thin slices. Thinly slice radishes, as well.
Spoon ramen noodles into a large bowl. Arrange salmon slices on top. Pour the fragrant chili broth all over. Top with radish slices and Pickled Cucumbers. Garnish with Chervil.
Enjoy Hot Salmon Ramen immediately.

You want to eat this, trust me, so here is the recipe. Adapted from this instagram post.

Weeknight Sesame Udon
Sauce 50ml soy sauce 1 tbsp dark soy sauce 2 tbsp zhī ma jiàng, Chinese Sesame Paste (a tahini or plain peanut butter will work in a pinch, but this is the best) 1-2 tbsp of mirin 2 tsp rice vinegar 1 tbsp Chinese five spice (optional-- spice averse people can leave this out) 1 thumb of ginger 3 cloves of garlic Deep fried tofu topping (can substitute this with plain peanuts if you don't have time or inclination to deep fry) 1 block firm tofu 1-2 tbsp corn starch 1/2 c or more of oil, I like peanut oil for this Quick Pickle Garnish Cucumbers 3 tbsp Rice vinegar Salt
Your Favourite Noodle (I like Udon myself, but this would be good with buckwheat noodles or ramen noodles) Other Garnish Scallions Lao Gan Ma, Chili crisp topping OPTIONAL: Greens you want to get rid of, such as spinach or gai lan.
(Quick pickles) Using a large knife, slice your cucumbers in half lengthwise.
(Quick Pickles) Chop each half into 3 inch sections. Smash the sections with the flat side of your knife (see the instagram video if you're not sure what I mean), then roughly chop the cucumber.
(Quick Pickles) Place in a bowl with a generous splash of rice vinegar and a pinch of salt, and put it in the fridge for later.
(Sauce) Grate the ginger and mince the garlic (if you are pressed for time and have money, the squeezable tubes will probably work fine for this). Mix all the sauce ingredients together and set aside.
(Tofu) Set out a plate with paper towel on your stove. Set out your frying pan and place about 1/4" depth of oil in there. Heat it up on medium-high.
(Tofu) While it's heating, drain the tofu into a large bowl. Crumble the tofu with your hands. The pieces should be fairly small. Toss in the cornstarch.
(Tofu) Carefully add the tofu to the hot oil. Let it fry for at least 5 minutes, or until the tofu is light gold in color. Add it carefully to the plate using a slotted spoon (be careful! hot oil!). Turn off the heat (I am writing this because I always forget this step).
(Tofu) Grab an additional paper towel and soak the extra oil off your tofu.
(Noodles) Boil a large pot of water for your noodles
(Noodles) While the water is heating, chop your scallions or extra greens.
(Noodles) Add the noddles to the boiling water and cook for the needed amount of time. If adding greens, in the last 45s of cooking time, throw in the greens to blanch them.
(Noodles) When the noodles are a desired softness, drain them. Mix the sauce, tofu (or peanuts) and noodles together. Serve, topped with scallions, quick pickles, and lao gan ma. Enjoy!
